Elude the Blues this Winter

Rush Oak Park Hospital's AGE-WISE program offers ways to stay active during the winter months.

Oak Park, IL (October 23, 2009) — In addition to protecting your physical health, it’s important to preserve your mental well-being during the dark — and sometimes dreary — winter months.

“As the seasons change, a lot of us can be impacted by the change in sunlight,” says Kari Fatta, RN, MSN, AGE-WISE Coordinator at Rush Oak Park Hospital. “When the days get shorter, we may find ourselves becoming less active.”

Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that can occur at this time of year. Symptoms can include:
  • anxiety
  • oversleeping
  • a marked increase or decrease in appetite
  • a desire to withdraw socially
  • and less interest in being active.

If you’re experiencing these symptoms for several days on end, you may want to speak with your physician.

Rush Oak Park Hospital’s AGE-WISE program will feature a number of programs this winter to help you stay active and social. Learn how to eat healthy through the holidays; how to get a good night’s sleep; and how to stay safe when it’s dark outside even in the early evening. Exercise programs in January and February will keep you moving in the coldest months of the year.
