Sandra Sokol retired as municipal clerk of the village of Oak Park earlier this year.
Oak Park, IL
(December 2, 2009) —
In her many roles in the village of Oak Park — as community activist, community representative and municipal clerk — Sandra Sokol has worked on issues of housing, education and economic development. She has served on boards and earned awards.
After recently joining Rush Oak Park Hospital’s Board of Directors, she’s now making her first major foray into health care. Rush Oak Park Hospital is proud to have her.
“We value the long history of Sandra’s service to and involvement in the village of Oak Park,” says Rush Oak Park Hospital President and CEO Bruce Elegant. “Her knowledge and insight will be important as we shape our programs to improve the health of the community.”
Sokol is excited about the challenge of the new experience. “I was certainly honored to be asked. I’m coming with an open mind to see what is going on and how I can be helpful. And I think that I will be.”
After moving to Oak Park in 1972 with her husband and children, Sokol started out as a community activist. In the 1980s, she accepted a position in the village’s community relations division. She made an election run in 1993 for municipal clerk. She won the election and held the position for 16 years before retiring earlier this year.
Over the decades as Sokol has watched Oak Park evolve, she also has witnessed Rush Oak Park Hospital’s growth. “Partnering with Rush University Medical Center has been wonderful,” she says.
“I think that the institution (Rush Oak Park Hospital) is extremely important not only for the village of Oak Park but for what it does for the people who live here and the people in surrounding communities,” she adds.
