Geriatrics

As we mature, our bodies change and require different medical care. Lung capacity, muscle strength and visual acuity may not be as robust. A common disease may cause uncommon symptoms. Medications, even at the correct dose, may cause unwanted side effects. A drug that works effectively for a 30-year-old can cause confusion or blurry vision in an older person. Withdrawal and apathy in an older person may signal an infection or heart disease rather than depression. The complexity of diseases and symptoms in an older person makes it important to have a physician who looks at the whole picture. A doctor who cares for older adults thinks holistically and looks beyond the immediate symptoms to consider other conditions, treatments, exercise regimen, diet, social support, and perhaps even housing arrangements and the patient's financial situation, because each plays a role in an older person's general health and good medical care.

Geriatric physicians specialize in the care of older adults. To find a primary care physician - an internal medicine or family practice doctor - who specializes in geriatrics, use our "Find a Physician" search or call 708-660-INFO (4636).

Our AGE-WISE program helps older adults stay well, independent, and informed about their health and disease prevention. And, our holistic approach to wellness also includes attention to nutrition, medications, social support and lifestyle. Specialized resources give seniors the support they need before returning home.

Our Center for Rehabilitation - managed by Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital - provides acute rehabilitation services after stroke, surgery or neurological disorder. The Hospital's Skilled Care Unit offers physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy, and features beauty and barber services and other comforting amenities.
