Pulmonary Rehabilitation

10-week Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program

Rush Oak Park Hospital's 10-week Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program provides comprehensive care to individuals with a wide variety of chronic lung diseases, including:

  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Emphysema
  • Asthma
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Sarcoidosis

The program uses a team approach to assess your individual situation and to design a comprehensive program to meet your needs.

Sessions are scheduled three times per week and combine education and exercise under the supervision of a respiratory therapist.

Your medical status and progress are monitored and evaluated. Educational sessions include breathing retraining, bronchial hygiene, information on the role of medications, energy conservation, proper nutrition and help coping with lung disease.

If you are considering lung surgery (transplant or lung-volume reduction), pulmonary rehabilitation can help you become as strong as possible before surgery, and to regain your strength and stamina more quickly after surgery.

Most insurance plans, including Medicare, offer reimbursement for pulmonary rehabilitation when prescribed by a physician. Rush Oak Park Hospital staff can help you determine the extent of your health care coverage.
